Collins Building & Civil Engineering Ltd carried out essential civil engineering work in support of the Grousemount Wind Farm’s Coomataggart 110 kV substation. The project forms part of major grid integration for Ireland’s largest onshore wind generation facility.

Scope of Works
Working alongside principal engineering contractors, Collins BCE delivered:

  • Site Enabling & Bulk Earthworks
    Extensive clearing and grading of rugged terrain to form the substation compound while mitigating environmental impact.
  • Substation Foundations
    Reinforced concrete baseworks for switchgear, transformer yards, control buildings, and associated high-voltage infrastructure.
  • Internal Access Roads & Hardstandings
    Construction of durable haul roads and crane hardstanding areas to support delivery, mobilisation, and long-term operations.
  • Stormwater & Drainage Systems
    Sustainable drainage solutions and culvert works designed to manage runoff and protect local waterways within the site area.
  • Perimeter Security Infrastructure
    Installation of secure fencing and gated access boundaries compliant with high-voltage facility standards.

Enabling Ireland’s Renewable Energy Expansion
Grousemount Wind Farm, with a capacity of 114 MW from 38 turbines, began construction in summer 2017 and entered operation by late 2019. The substation facilitates connection to the national electricity grid via a 31.5 km 110 kV underground cable to Ballyvouskill Substation in County Cork. Our civil works were pivotal to enabling this major export infrastructure.
