Porterstown Battery Storage

Civil Works for 30 MW Battery Storage & 110 kV Substation Support
Location: Porterstown (Kilteel), County Kildare, Ireland

Powering Grid Resilience with Precision Civil Engineering
Collins Building & Civil Engineering Ltd provided essential civil engineering support to the Porterstown 30 MW battery storage facility, co-located with the existing Kilteel 110 kV substation. This greenfield expansion supports integration of large-scale energy storage capacity into the national grid infrastructure.

Scope of Works
Working in collaboration with principal contractors and grid infrastructure teams, Collins BCE executed:

  • Control Building Foundations
Concrete baseworks for switchgear containment and grid interface equipment.
  • Structural Works for Electrical Containers
Reinforced support structures for transformer, inverter, and customer switchgear modules.
  • Ducting, Cabling & Drainage Systems
Underground ducting for electrical cabling, earth grid installation, and sustainable stormwater drainage systems.
  • Earthworks & Site Preparation
Bulk excavation, site-level stoning, and grading across the expanded footprint of approximately 1.95 ha.
  • Perimeter Fencing & Security Gates
Installation of palisade fencing, boundary posts and rail systems, and secured entrance gating compliant with utility standards.

Delivered with Utility-Grade Accuracy
Civil operations supported live substation infrastructure, adhering strictly to planning permissions (including planning ref. 18/247, updated via case ref. 23276 in May 2023). Collins BCE coordinated site sequencing and utility requirements to ensure grid readiness and compliance.

Enabling Critical Storage Infrastructure
The Porterstown site forms part of Gore Street Energy Storage Fund’s national BESS portfolio, delivering 30 MW (phase one) and designed for future expansion up to 90 MW. The installation is aimed to be operational by late 2021 under a DS3 contracts program for grid stability services.
