Holy Trinity Abbey Adare

Also known as: Trinitarian Abbey | Today: Catholic Parish Church
Location: Main Street, Adare Village, County Limerick, Ireland

A Rare Medieval Monastic Legacy
Founded around 1230 (possibly as early as 1226) by Geoffrey de Marisco to house Ireland’s only Trinitarian monastery—the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives, known for ransom missions during the Crusades.

In 1272, the abbey was rebuilt under the patronage of John FitzThomas FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Kildare.

It was dissolved in 1539 during the Tudor Reformation. The site gradually fell into ruin thereafter.

Restoration and Modern Use

  • In 1811, the 2nd Earl of Dunraven facilitated the restoration of the existing abbey remains into a functioning Catholic parish church. A second phase of restoration in 1852–1854 preserved the medieval fabric while adapting it for modern worship.
  • The existing structure integrates the medieval tower, nave, and choir, alongside significant 19th‑century architectural work. Notable preserved features include piscinas, dovecote, and cloister remains.

What Makes It Special

  • Uniqueness: The only known Trinitarian monastic house in Ireland, often called the “White Monastery” due to the white habit of its monks.
  • Architectural Heritage: Combines Gothic revival restoration with vestiges of medieval ecclesiastic layout and monastic structures.

Present-Day Significance

  • Function: Active Roman Catholic parish church, hosting daily and weekend Mass, deeply embedded in local worship life.
  • Cultural: Located adjacent to the Adare Heritage Centre, it is a focal point for history enthusiasts visiting the village.
